It’s no secret that having qualifications in English, Maths and IT will help you get a job. Often, it can be the difference between someone being selected for an interview, or not. But what do you do when you find yourself out of work and without a single qualification to your name? That’s exactly what happened to Stuart Abel, our Jobseeker of The Month for September.
Back in February, Stuart was referred to our Doncaster learning centre by his advisor at the Jobcentre because he wanted to find work in the retail, warehousing or customer service sector.
Unfortunately almost two decades ago, the 34 year-old left school without any qualifications, something Stuart puts down to mixing with the wrong people and his experiences during adolescence.
However, Stuart saw the free courses in2wrk offer as a second chance, and he soon began his learning journey with us.
In September we were delighted when Stuart gained full-time employment with First Structure in Doncaster as a Labourer.
To get the job, Stuart had to utilise some of the skills he learnt during his time in our centre to complete a job application and answer questions during the interview.
Speaking after Stuart received in2wrk’s top award, Tutor Justin Clover was full of praise for his former student.
“Stuart was committed to his goal – to improve his English, Maths and IT levels, so he could provide a better future for his family.
“I speak for everyone at the centre in wishing him all the very best in his new job and for the future.”
Stuart, who came to us with an educational mountain to climb, approached his studies with a good attitude, worked hard and ultimately got what he deserved – a greatly enhanced CV and a full-time job.
After being presented with his Jobseeker of The Month certificate and £20 Love2Shop vouchers, he was extremely positive about his time at in2wrk Doncaster and even expressed his sadness about having to leave!
“To be honest, I wish I could have done more at the centre,” Stuart said.
“But I also know how important it is for me to be able to support my family.
“There’s no doubt that the skills I gained here gave me the confidence to go out and find work.”
Stuart is just one of thousands of people we help to upskill and improve their career prospects every year in our learning centres across the country.
