Every month a number of people come to our centre, each with a different goal in mind. From wanting to gain new skills to needing a qualification for a specific job. Throughout June, our tutors have helped many learners reach their goals. Unfortunately, we can’t shine a light on all of their stories, but here are the people that our tutors have crowned their Learners of the Month for June!
Michael Marrow – Stockport & Tameside
Michael started an IT course in our Tameside centre back in February and achieved a Level 1 qualification. But with a goal to find employment in a Customer Service role, Michael then jumped at the chance to participate in our two-week Customer Service workshop in Stockport.
Michael had to travel an hour each day to get to and from the Stockport centre to do the course. However, his commitment paid off in the end, as he was able to secure full-time employment as a Customer Service Advisor with Next after he completed the workshop with us.
“I am so pleased I have now found work. This has been my goal from the beginning and these qualifications have really helped me. I now know how to use a computer properly and feel more confident in dealing with customers,” Michael told us.
Walter Matfin – Hull
Walter came to in2wrk Hull in March after being made redundant earlier this year. He wanted to improve his IT skills to give him the best chance of finding work.
Beginning with Entry Level 3 IT, Walter gained a basic understanding of computer systems. He then developed his learning by completing the Level 1 qualification. As he is looking for a new career Walter decided to take part in the two-week Business Admin workshop and is hoping it will have a positive impact on his career prospects.
“It’s great coming here, everyone is really friendly and relaxed. I was made redundant in March and needed to update my CV with new qualifications. I want to change my career path so I’m doing the Business Admin course to help with that,” Walter said.
Once Walter has finished the Business Admin course he is hoping to continue his learning so he can achieve his Level 2 IT qualification.
Stephanie Harris – Pudsey
Stephanie came to our centre as she wanted to improve her IT skills in order to better her chances of finding work. Stephanie has already completed two qualifications with us and is well on her way to achieving her third.
Stephanie began by learning the basics at Entry Level 3 before moving onto the Level 1 qualification. During her time with us she faced some challenges with her learning but through patience, perseverance and hard-work she was able to overcome them and moved onto the Level 2 qualification.
“So far I have achieved Entry Level 3 and Level 1 IT. The staff at Pudsey have helped and encouraged me to achieve this. I have vastly improved my computer skills and when I have finished my Level 2, I will hopefully be able to find a job,” Stephanie told us
Once Stephanie has completed the Level 2 qualification, she’ll be in a stronger position to find work as the course teaches its learners office-based skills such as using Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Powerpoint Presentations.
Robert Tonks – Wolverhampton
Robert started at our centre back in February as he had been out of employment for a year and decided it was time to gain some qualifications that could improve his job prospects. Robert had worked as a Plasterer for 25 years but due to a lack of opportunities in the industry, he became unemployed.
To help his chances of finding work, Robert decided he needed to improve his IT skills as all the jobs he was interested in required him to apply online. As Robert had been in employment for 25 years, he’d never before used computers to apply for jobs. He began with the Entry Level 3 qualification so he could learn the basics. It took him some time to work through the course but he achieved his goal and boosted his confidence in his IT skills.
“The IT skills have given me the confidence to apply for jobs online and I am getting positive responses from employers,” Robert said.
With his new confidence and ability to apply for jobs online, Robert is well on his way to finding full-time work.
Andrew Wilson – Hunslet
Andrew came to our Hunslet centre back in April as he wanted to gain some qualifications that would help improve his chances of finding work. He was drawn towards our two-week Call Centre training, which would give him the chance to gain three valuable qualifications.
As a partially blind learner, Andrew did face some challenges along the way. But, he stuck with his learning and has progressed well throughout. Andrew is about to complete his Level 2 IT qualification and has a number of interviews lined up.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time. Everyone has been very supportive and helped me gain not only extra qualifications but confidence in my own ability as well. It’s never too late in life to enhance one’s learning experience,” Andrew told us.
