Having a Forklift Licence is a requirement for any career that involves the use of a Forklift. So to help people in Doncaster get the skills they needed for a career in the warehousing industry, we ran our first ever Forklift Licence training package.
Despite the Warehousing sector traditionally being a highly male-dominated industry, we had the privilege of speaking to Lucy Williams, a transgender woman, who enrolled on the course as she wanted to gain a Forklift Licence to improve her job search.
Lucy first heard about this workshop through her local Job Centre and despite being hesitant at first, was keen to do the course.
“When I first heard of the FLT course I was unsure but it’s something that I’ve always looked into learning,” Lucy told us.
As part of the three-week training package, learners participated in two weeks of classroom-based learning and then one week of practical Forklift training. During the classroom-based portion of the course, learners had the opportunity to achieve four qualifications in Warehousing & Storage, Customer Service, Digital Skills and Social Media.
Achieving these four qualifications as well as gaining a Forklift Licence was very appealing for Lucy.
“Being able to learn these new skills will open up a lot more avenues for jobs in the future.”
“I’ve really enjoyed the course so far. It’s been entertaining, educational and very helpful.”
Now with four new qualifications and a Forklift Licence under her belt, Lucy is excited about how they will benefit her career prospects.
“Now I’ve got these new skills and qualifications, I’ll be looking to gain even more in the future. Then hopefully I’ll go on to gain employment through my new skills.”
“I would recommend anybody looking to do the FLT course, it’s a valuable skill that workplaces are looking for.”
